Increasing use of toxic industrial chemicals, slow pace of disposal of toxic wastes from contaminated sites and lack of effective control in reducing emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are contributing to global warming and polluting the environment. Cutting of trees, cleaning and reducing forested areas and slow replenishing of forested areas are making the effects of pollution more devastating.
In recent times the effects of pollution have been draining the nutrients from soil, reducing major marine life, increasing the presence of harmful microorganisms in water and having adverse effects on the biodiversity. American Long Association has reported that particle pollution resulting from emissions from power plants, vehicles, burning of wood and agricultural products is increasing risks of asthma attacks, heart attacks, cancer and other breathing problems. The same report says that nearly 23 percent of Americans live under conditions of particle pollution through out the year exposing themselves to serious health hazards.
The U.S. Clean Air Act of 1970 and its later amendments define air quality and purity standards and compelled market forces and industries to control air pollution. Clean Water Act (1972) defines the U.S. water quality and purity standards, its 1987 amendment laid down norms for controlling emission of toxic pollutants and the 1990 amendment made laws to control hazards from oil spill. Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act provided for companies to clean toxic wastes from contaminated sites. Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (1986) has made it mandatory for the companies to disclose information about the toxic gases and chemicals they release into air, water and land.
All these laws provide opportunities to people to file public interest suits whenever they find something wrong being done to pollute the environment.
