There are always different players and players who play better than their peers. However, sometimes better play is not recognized by the public eye. People choose to see what they want to see and who they feel is good or not. Players who play on smaller teams like the Clippers will not be as recognized, as if they had played on the New York Knicks. Sometimes, players even on big market teams are not well known for their game. These people are known as the unsung heroes.
Players can come and go, but respect and fame is one of the everlasting things that players want. They want to play well and to win ball games, but they want to be looked and known for the future. If you ask a writer, he will probably say something along the lines of wanting to be remembered. However, sometimes this is not possible no matter how well they play.
Players like: Elton Brand, Shawn Marion, and Manu are not highly known for their skill as players. However, these players are almost as good as the superstars that we have learned to look in admiration. Elton Brand has averaged about 25 points, 10 rebounds and 2.5 blocks last year but he is still in the same position. When people mention who the best player in the league is, his name will probably not be called up as often. Meanwhile, stars like Kobe will make every list. It is a respect that cannot be bought.
When the respect is given, it is only given after much scrutiny. Fans and people who follow sport will not want to give credit to those that do not deserve it. Everyone wants to be a hero but that is not possible. Sometimes, the only respect that can be won is by perseverance. Believing in yourself and playing hard will give you respect if you are on a good team.
Players on bad and on small teams will not be remembered as well. This is why sometimes luck can come between fame and respect.
