When upgrading from DVD or VCR to the latest high definition formats, you’ll find two choices: Blu-ray disc and HD-DVD. If you’re old enough to remember the failed Betamax fiasco and other format wars, you’re likely thinking, “Here we go again.” While Blu-ray technology has the clear cut advantage including widespread industry support, superior storage capacity, better quality overall, and hundreds of titles already available on disc, you can still hedge your bets. No, you don’t need to go over to the Dark Side or sell your soul to the Devil. Instead consider a combo player such as the LG Super Blu dual format Blu-ray disc player.
Remember the DVD/VCR combo players that let you have both a DVD as well as a VCR in one handy component? Same idea here except with the dual format high definition players, you get both a Blu-ray disc player and a HD-DVD player in one box. In addition to the two high-def formats, the dual blu-ray player is also capable of playing all of your old DVDs. As far as the VHS tapes go, you’re out of luck there – unless someone comes out with a triple combo player.
In the case of the LG Super Blu Blu-ray player, it is a Blu-ray disc player at heart with full support of the Blu-ray technology including support for BD-J (Bluray Disc Java) and resolutions of 1080p. 1080i upconversion makes it possible to upgrade your existing collection of DVD titles for better video performance.
This Blu-ray disc player also handles the HD-DVD format as far as being able to play the audio and video on HD-DVDs. However, it does not support the HDi features that are found on many of the HD-DVD discs.
Another combo Blu-ray player is from Samsung, the BD-UP5000. Samsung has opted to supplement their lineup of HDTV products to include both a standalone Blu-ray disc player as well as a dual format player.
